Several years ago we began looking for a way to create an income on some of our acreage in central Iowa. Something that could be grown or raised organically, is native to the area, is relatively pest and disease resistant and could be raised fairly easily. Aronia melanocarpa fit the criteria.
Why did we have such strange criteria? I have extreme sensitivities to a lot of things, chemicals are a big no in our life. I am very sensitive to lots of things and really haven’t worked away from home full-time for over 20 years. So whatever we did had to meet the criteria.
We planted the Aronia bushes over several years, starting in 2008. These bushes began as a 6-12″ stick with leaves. They were so small, they came to us in a bedding plant flat. We planted and planted, cleared areas and cleared areas. Finally in 2012 we had four different fields, about 5,000 plants and high hopes.
We bought a big tractor and equipment to till the rows and they finally grew! We were so excited after the first three years when we had berries! The bushes have continued to grow and flourish. We have struggled with frost, snow and weird weather which affects the production. But we are ecstatic as we mow and watch the blooms form, berries come on and turn. Our granddaughters believe berry harvesting day in early September or late August is their favorite day of the year.
One day when I was complaining about pulling weeds and trimming little saplings out of the rows, a wise man told us to hang in there, the products he was developing were going to really make a difference in the lives of many people. He told me, “You can pull a weeds when you know you will be making someone healthier.” He was right. Fast forward, here we are.
